Portrait Photography Workshop


Our locations will be the Botanic Gardens, Dunedin Railway Station and the very photogenic Otago University.

Date/Time: Saturday 3rd August at 10am
Meet Point: 361 Leith Street Central

This workshop will have a focus on the many aspects of portrait photography. From learning the best setting for portraits, to posing your model and capturing candid movements. Post processing also plays a huge part in portrait photography. This is where colour co-ordination and grading comes in. We will cover many tools and techniques in the editing workshop.


Workshop Structure

10am: Meet and discuss camera settings and location, outfit and colour coordination

10:30 am: First Location - Botanic Gardens

12 pm: Second Location - Otago University

Lunch Break

2pm: Third Location - Dunedin Railway Station

4pm: Editing Workshop at OUSA (2 hrs)

Who is this Workshop For?

Beginners-Intermediate Photographers. If you would like to learn how to shoot in manual mode (or how to make the most out of your smart phone) and how to post process your photos to look more professional - this workshop is for you! As we are a small group, there will be lots of opportunities to ask questions and work closely with each other and myself.

What You Will Learn:

  • Lighting and Composition

  • Location Scouting: What to look for?

  • Manual Mode Settings: ISO, AV/Aperture, TV/Shutter Speed

  • White Balance, Focus Modes, Drive Modes

  • Portrait Photography Tips and Best Camera Settings

  • How to direct and position your models (or yourself)

  • Post Processing: Tools and Techniques

  • Tonal Curves, HSL, Tonal Balance and Colour Grading

  • Luminance, Radial, Gradient, Colour and Brush Masks

  • How to create your own presets

What to Bring:

  • Camera (any model is fine, there are no requirements).

  • Laptop or tablet/smartphone to edit photos

  • 2-3 outfits from casual to fancy

  • Accessories like hats, scarves, watches, jewellery would be great
